How to Choose an Engagement Session Location

Wedding Tips

Okay, let’s talk engagement session locations!

Choosing your engagement session location can be so difficult! One of the first questions I get from couples after they book is: “Where should we take our engagement photos?” And my answer is always the same…

Somewhere that feels like YOU.

Your engagement session does not have to be at the most popular park. It doesn’t have to look exactly like every other photo you’ve saved on Pinterest. It doesn’t have to be a place that everyone else is choosing. The best engagement session locations are the ones that tell your story!

And that is exactly what Mike and Alexis did.

Your Minnesota Engagement Session Can Be Anywhere!

I think sometimes couples feel pressure to find the “perfect” location for their engagement photos. But here’s the thing… There is no perfect location. The perfect location is the one where you can relax, be yourselves, and celebrate this season of life together!

Maybe it’s:

  • Your family farm
  • The lake where you spend your summers
  • Your favorite coffee shop
  • The place you had your first date
  • Your hometown
  • Your grandparents’ property
  • A park you love exploring together

Your engagement photos are about your relationship – not just the scenery behind you!

A Family Farm Engagement Session Full of Meaning

When Mike and Alexis told me they wanted to do their engagement session at his family’s farm, I immediately loved the idea SO MUCH! Because this wasn’t just a pretty backdrop. This place had history. It had memories. It was part of their story.

Walking around the property, we got to explore old barns, fields, and all the little places that make the farm special. One of my favorite moments was seeing Mike’s grandpa outside sitting on the bumper of his car, watching us throughout the evening. I couldn’t help but wonder what he was thinking!

I imagine he was remembering the good old days. Thinking about all the years that have passed, all the memories made on this land, and now watching another generation begin their own story. He even shared with me that the oldest barn on the property is around 175 years old!

Can you imagine everything that barn has witnessed? Generations of family. Countless seasons. So many memories. And now it gets to be part of Mike and Alexis’ engagement photos too. How special is that?!

Choose an Engagement Session Location Where You Can Be Yourselves

The second thing I always encourage couples to think about is: “Will we actually feel comfortable here?” Because the location matters, but how you feel matters even more. You want somewhere where you can laugh, talk, snuggle up, and forget that there is even a camera there!

And I just have to brag on these two for a minute because they made my job SO easy.

They are just so clearly in love.

I gave them a little direction and prompts throughout the evening, and they took it and made it completely their own. They laughed together, smiled nonstop, and were so excited to simply be together! The best part? Nothing felt forced. It was just them.

And that’s always my goal during engagement sessions.

I don’t want you to feel like you’re “posing” for photos. I want your photos to feel like a reflection of your relationship – the way you actually laugh together, the way you naturally hold hands, and the little moments that make you you. There are never any awkward posing over here! But you will also never have to worry about where to put your hands if you think you are “awkward” at photos!

Mike and Alexis are counting down the days until their wedding next summer, and I am so excited for them! Getting to cheer couples on during this season before marriage is truly one of my favorite parts of being a Minnesota wedding photographer.

Three Questions to Ask When Choosing Your Engagement Session Location

If you’re trying to decide where to take your engagement photos, here are three questions I recommend asking:

1. Does this place mean something to us?

The most beautiful locations are often the ones connected to your story.

2. Will we feel comfortable here?

Choose somewhere you can relax and enjoy being together.

3. Will this location still matter years from now?

Your engagement photos are not just for this season. They are a reminder of the excitement, joy, and anticipation before you said “I do.”
