Engagement Session at Schaar’s Bluff in Minnesota
Morgan and Luke met me for their Engagement Session at Spring Lake Park Reserve’s Schaar’s Bluff in Hastings, Minnesota, and all afternoon I had been doing what every Minnesota photographer knows a little too well – refreshing the weather app every few minutes.
Would the storm hold off?
Should we reschedule?
Would we get lucky?
I thought to myself I felt more like a storm chaser than a photographer 🤣
I’m so thankful we decided to just for it! As Morgan and Luke pulled into the parking lot, a light mist welcomed us. We all looked at each other wondering if this was the beginning of the rain… but just as quickly as it started, it stopped. And as we started walking the trails in search of the perfect light (because if you know me, you know I’m always chasing the best light), a rainbow stretched across the evening sky. 😍 It honestly felt like the sweetest little gift from the Lord to start their session.
Morgan and Luke brought along their adorable puppy, who was full of excitement from the moment we started. I absolutely love when couples include their pets during engagement sessions. They’re part of your story, too! Years from now, these photos won’t just remind you of this season of being engaged – they’ll remind you of the little family you were already building together.
A Puppy Who Stole the Show
Of course, every energetic puppy deserves a helper!
Luke’s mom came along to puppy-sit between photos, and I have to give her the award for Best Dog Grandma Ever!!
Watching her cheer them on, laugh at the puppy’s zoomies, and quietly witness the love between her son and future daughter-in-law was incredibly sweet. 🥹 Those are the moments that often go unnoticed, but they’re part of the story, too.

Schaar’s Bluff has become one of my favorite engagement session locations in Minnesota!
Between the rolling prairie, winding trails, overlooks of the Mississippi River, and glowing evening light, it’s the kind of place that feels peaceful no matter the season!
But this location holds an even deeper meaning for me…
Three years ago, my husband and I were here for our own engagement photos at sunrise. Walking these same trails again with a different couple preparing for marriage felt incredibly full circle!
